The first is a perspective called Neuroscience; this is how the body and brain create emotions, memories, and sensory experiences. The psychologists use this to perspective to try and figure out how the messages that the brain sends out are transmitted through out the body. (Myers. 1998) The psychologists use another perspective to find out how evolution influences behavior tendencies. This is called the evolutionary perspective. Behavior genetics is another perspective that is used to see how much our genes, and our environment, influence our individual differences. Environment has a lot to do with the way that people react and behave in different situations. The psychologists use the behavioral perspective to find out how we learn observable responses. The History of Death and Burial Customs Death has always been both celebrated and feared. As far back as 60,000 BCE, humans buried their dead with ritual and ceremony. Researchers have even found evidence that Neanderthals buried their dead with flowers, much as we do today. Appeasing the Spirits Many early burial rites and customs were practiced to protect the living, by appeasing the spirits who were thought to have caused the persons death. Such ghost protection rituals and superstitions have varied extensively with time and place, as well as with religious perception, but many are still in use today. The custom of shutting the eyes of the deceased is believed to have begun this way, done in an attempt to close a window from the living world to the spirit world. Covering the face of the deceased with a sheet comes from pagan beliefs that the spirit of the deceased escaped through the mouth. In some cultures, the home of the deceased was burned or destroyed to keep his spirit from returning; in other,s the doors were unlocked and windows were opened to ensure that the soul was able to escape. In 19th century Europe and America, the dead were carried out of the house feet first, in order to prevent the spirit from looking back into the house and beckoning another member of the family to follow him, or so that he couldnt see where he was going and would be unable to return. Mirrors were also covered, usually with black crepe, so the soul would not get trapped and be left unable to pass to the other side. William Tecumseh Sherman was born on May 8, 1820 in Lancaster, Ohio. He was educated at the U.S. Military Academy and later went on to become a Union General in the U.S. civil war. Sherman resigned from the army in 1853 and became a partner in a banking firm in San Francisco. He became the president of the Military College in Louisiana(now Louisiana state University) from 1859-1861. When the children are performing, we can see how they have less respect for the culture by mucking up and not concentrating. I showed this disrespect by doing a full length shot on all the kids and then zooming in on Pai’s face showing her in shock. I also added in a scene showing the community laughing. This scene shows how the whole community isn’t committed to their culture. Pai is the only child who doesn’t find this disrespect funny. This scene shows how Pai is fully committed to her culture and the generational differences between the elders and the new generation. The new generation in the film do care about their culture which is the complete opposite to the elder generations who show full respect to their ancestors. When Pai’s father, Porourangi arrives, the mise-en-scene of their surroundings is important because it connects them with their culture.
